Earlier today the world was saddened to hear of the passing of Neil Armstrong, the first human to walk on the surface of the moon.
I remember that day back in 1969. I was nearly 7 years old and in primary school. Every room in the school had a television showing the live coverage of this historic event. Even the corridors had televisions. I strongly suspect that was more for the benefit of the teachers than the pupils.
Being so young the magnitude of what we witnessed didn’t register with me until a while later. Nevertheless, I’m glad I was “there” to see what happened live.
Despite achieving worldwide fame, after the event Armstrong refused to make a “celebrity” of himself, and lived a modest life.
RIP Neil. You will be long remembered by history.
