On October 3, 1952, the British tested their first atomic bomb. The test was conducted in the Montebello Islands 100 kilometres off the coast of Western Australia. It was given the code name “Operation Hurricane”. It was the first of 12 nuclear weapons tested by the British in Australia between 1952 and 1963.
