It’s not just Australia where the conservative side of politics has a problem with the truth. As the video from the Obama campaign below shows, American conservatives, in particular Vice Presidential wannabe Paul Ryan, seems to have the same problem. Stephen Colbert, in his own inimitable fashion, rips apart the level of “truthiness” in Ryan’s speech at the Republican Party’s National Convention. Of particular note was the comment about how his musical taste runs from “AC/DC to Zeppelin” implying that his musical taste is “classic rock” that runs from one end of the alphabet to the other. The Derp can only assume by “Zeppelin”, he means Led Zeppelin, whose name begins with an “L”, not a “Z”.  From that we can also assume that means

Earlier today the world was saddened to hear of the passing of Neil Armstrong, the first human to walk on the surface of the moon. I remember that day back in 1969. I was nearly 7 years old and in primary school. Every room in the school had a television showing the live coverage of this historic event. Even the corridors had televisions. I strongly suspect that was more for the benefit of the teachers than the pupils. Being so young the magnitude of what we witnessed didn’t register with me until a while later. There has been a lot of comments on the Airport Body Scanners since they were first proposed. Much of it has been centred on the invasion of privacy as well as possible radiation effects on the health of those subjected to it. Now a blogger who has a background in engineering has shown how utterly useless the airport body scanners are in detecting any weapons or contraband that travellers may be trying to get through customs. Watch this video:   So, all a “terrorist” or drug smuggler has to do is sew a pocket onto the side of their garments, and they’ll be able to sail through the scanners. It is now more obvious than ever that the only reason these are being introduced is

Recent attempts to find out exactly where “think tanks” like the IPA get their funding from is not something that is unique to Australia. In the UK and particularly the US, these institutions wield enormous influence with limited accountability or transparency. One of their favourite techniques of influencing debate on issues such as climate change, is to sow seeds of doubt about the authenticity of scientific research into these areas. By using a technique pioneered by tobacco companies, of insisting that the “jury is out” on these issues, they manage to muddy the waters and prevent action being taken on these matters. Not surprisingly it turns out that organisations who will be most affected by action on these issues are frequently found to be the
