In a joint press conference yesterday, Tony Abbott and Shadow Minister for Industrial Relations, Eric Abetz outlined their long awaited plan to turn Australia into a workers paradise. But is it as worker friendly as they would have you believe? Sally McManus of the ASU has done an analysis of the proposed changes, and is less than happy with them. You can read her analysis here: What Tony Abbott Proposes To Take Away One of the most salient points is: Weaken the Award safety-net (loosen the “better off overall test” so agreements can go below even the Award minimum). Wages apparently, cannot go low enough for the Tories. Cheap labour is their holy grail. Cheap-labor conservatives don’t like social spending or our “safety net”. Why.

The Streisand Effect has been discussed a couple of times on this blog.  It refers to the effect that trying to cover something up or suppressing it, has the opposite effect of drawing attention to it. The last time it was covered was when Margie Abbott was given blanket coverage in News Limited‘s fish-wrappers to try and convince women voters that her husband, the lying, hypocritical, cowardly Tony Abbott isn’t a misogynistic relic from the distant past (See Margie Abbott And The Streisand Effect). The women (and men) of Australia were not fooled by the shallow attempt to raise his appeal amongst women voters however, and so all that pathetic effort did was draw attention to his obvious shortcomings. Albert Einstein said that (words to

Menzies House, the website set up by Cory “Bestiality” Bernardi, to promote “conservative, centre-right and libertarian” causes, has shown that it is not concerned about the “centre-right” at all. A recent post on the site proves it is firmly on the ultra-hard-right end of the spectrum. The article entitled “Child Labour Laws May Prove Punitive For Some” written by someone who is described as “a member of the Young Liberal Movement studying law at Macquarie University”, states that repealing the child labour laws would benefit children from poorer socio-economic backgrounds. In the fourth paragraph the author states: If a poor child were able to work from the age of 8 to 16 years old, they would accumulate enough money to take a family out of

TONY ABBOTT: I am giving you the most definite commitment any politician can give that this tax will go. This is a pledge in blood: this tax will go. We can get rid of it, we will get rid of it, we must get rid of it. October 12, 2011 (source: Abbott promises to repeal carbon tax) Since the first day it was announced Abbott has described the “carbon tax” (actually a price on carbon emissions), a “toxic tax” that will increase the cost of living for everyone. He also disingenuously described it as a “great big tax on everything”, which would put in the same league as the “never, ever” G.S.T. I’d imagine. So, four months after its implementation, let’s have a look at

There was apparently a Newspoll taken last weekend (September 29-30), the results of which, for unknown reasons, were never released. Rumours abounded that News Limited, which owns Newspoll, were disappointed with the results because they showed Labor in front of the Noalition and were highly unfavourable to its leader Tony Abbott. The Daily Derp has previously covered how News Limited manipulates Newspoll’s results by publishing phantom leadership challenge articles in the run up to the polls being taken (Leadership Challenges And Newspoll). Last weekend also saw the scandal that blew up over the disgraceful comments made by the far right mouthpiece Alan Jones(1) at a Liberal Party function attended by several Liberal frontbenchers. One can imagine that this would have had some sort of effect

Splashed across the front page of The Daily Terrorgraph, Rupert Murdoch’s low brow Sydney tabloid is the following headline: Exclusive: School excursions hit by Swan budget cuts Taking The Lunch Money The story is written by Steve Lewis, the “journalist” responsible for the “Utegate” fabrication, and up to his eyeballs in the Slippergate scandal as well. With a pedigree like that, i guess we shouldn’t expect too much from him. It claims: CHILDREN visiting federal parliament will be deprived of free bottled water and fruit treats as Treasurer Wayne Swan plays Grinch to school groups. In the latest budget crackdown even teachers who shepherd the kids through the building will no longer get tea and coffee — all for a saving of $235,000 a year.

In a previous article The Derp made note of the decline of the ABC’s flagship current affairs program 730 (Bring On The Dodgy Plumbers). When Leigh Sales left the show to go on maternity leave, sidekick Chris Uhlmann took over as host. Since then the show has gone even further downhill. All the blame for this decline is solely attributable to Uhlmann’s “interview” style. Rather than let the conversation evolve, Uhlmann seems to have a set list of questions to ask, and races through them, often talking over his guests in order to make sure every question gets asked. This makes the interviews very stilted, and often veer from one topic to another without any sense of coherence. When interviewing members of the Government, Uhlmann

(Special thanks to Space Kidette and BH from Poll Bludger for their input into this article). Joe Hockey has once again proven what an economic buffoon he is, and how dangerous he would be to the Australian economy if he becomes Treasurer. He recently sent out this email to his fan base: Dear subscriber, When Wayne Swan and Labor bring down their Budget next week, they will try and tell you that they can deliver their first surplus since 1990. But in reality, all Labor will be doing is using tricky accounting in an effort to concoct a surplus from this year’s $40 billion deficit. How can we believe Labor when they have delivered the four biggest Budget deficits on record in the last 4
