The Streisand Effect has been discussed a couple of times on this blog. It refers to the effect that trying to cover something up or suppressing it, has the opposite effect of drawing attention to it. The last time it was covered was when Margie Abbott was given blanket coverage in News Limited‘s fish-wrappers to try and convince women voters that her husband, the lying, hypocritical, cowardly Tony Abbott isn’t a misogynistic relic from the distant past (See Margie Abbott And The Streisand Effect). The women (and men) of Australia were not fooled by the shallow attempt to raise his appeal amongst women voters however, and so all that pathetic effort did was draw attention to his obvious shortcomings. Albert Einstein said that (words to

The original article (here: Bishop denies Labor’s asbestos claims, or if that link has been removed, I have taken a screenshot of the article and made it into a PDF file which can be downloaded from here: Bishop denies Labor’s asbestos claims). In this article it is stated: In 2007, Slater & Gordon’s Peter Gordon told Australian Doctor Magazine Ms Bishop had great sympathy for the victims of asbestos-related diseases. The link to the original article has been removed from the News Limited website (the link I quoted above is to

Rumours abounded that News Limited, which owns Newspoll, were disappointed with the results because they showed Labor in front of the Noalition and were highly unfavourable to its leader Tony Abbott. The Daily Derp has previously covered how News Limited manipulates Newspoll’s results by publishing phantom leadership challenge articles in the run up to the polls being taken (Leadership Challenges And Newspoll). Last weekend also saw the scandal that blew up over the disgraceful comments made by the far right mouthpiece Alan Jones(1) at a Liberal Party function attended by several Liberal frontbenchers. One can imagine that this would have had some sort of effect

In an article on July 4, 2012, alleged “journalist” Ian McPhedran named a soldier recently killed in action in Afghanistan. This prompted the Army Chief to pen a letter to the editor. In the letter Lieutenant General David Morrison lambasted the paper for naming the soldier before this information was officially released by the Army and the soldier’s family. From the letter: The Army and the Defence Force have well established protocols for the release of names and personal details in these circumstances; protocols with which your journalists are very familiar but have clearly chosen to ignore. And: The family in this instance, whose lives are currently consumed with their own

Early into the show panel member Simon Sheikh of lobbyist group GetUp fainted, the vile Sophie Mirabella was seen by a national TV audience to first look at Mr Sheikh with a look of absolute disgust, and then to push him away from her. Here is a video of the incident: Compare the reactions of the odious Mirabella to that of Climate Change Minister, Greg Combet. As soon as Mr Combet became aware of what happened, he raced over to help Mr Sheikh, as the abominable Mirabella showed her disgust. Even LNP cheerleaders, News Limited were critical of her behaviour, as was

With a pedigree like that, i guess we shouldn’t expect too much from him. It claims: CHILDREN visiting federal parliament will be deprived of free bottled water and fruit treats as Treasurer Wayne Swan plays Grinch to school groups. In the latest budget crackdown even teachers who shepherd the kids through the building will no longer get tea and coffee — all for a saving of $235,000 a year.

Every time there is a Newspoll out in the field, the Murdoch owned News Limited fish wrappers will run a story on a supposed leadership challenge by Kevin Rudd against the Prime Minister Julia Gillard. This weekend is no exception. Newspoll is of course run by News Limited, and they are currently working the phones as I write this. Beyond doubt one of the questions they will be asking is about who voters would prefer as Prime Minister, Ms Gillard or Mr Rudd. You can bet your house on it. To gee things up a bit on this (apparently) burning issue, one of the News Limited rags always publishes an article on an alleged leadership challenge

Compare the quotes from two different Murdoch publications: From the Wall Street Journal: “We are not coming here to receive lessons in terms of democracy or in terms of how to manage our economy,” said European Commission President José Manuel Barroso. Mr. Barroso, asked by a Canadian reporter why North Americans should help pay for Europe’s crisis, broke from his conciliatory tone and effectively blamed U.S. practices for causing the European troubles. “This crisis was not originated in Europe,” Mr. Barroso said. “This crisis was originated in North America. Many in our financial sector were contaminated by unorthodox practices from some sectors of the financial market.” Meanwhile on news.com.au: In an embarrassing swipe at the PM, on the first day of the
