The Streisand Effect has been discussed a couple of times on this blog.  It refers to the effect that trying to cover something up or suppressing it, has the opposite effect of drawing attention to it. The last time it was covered was when Margie Abbott was given blanket coverage in News Limited‘s fish-wrappers to try and convince women voters that her husband, the lying, hypocritical, cowardly Tony Abbott isn’t a misogynistic relic from the distant past (See Margie Abbott And The Streisand Effect). Over the last few months there has been growing speculation that embattled Leader of the Opposition, Tony Abbott is going to get rolled. This has now all but been confirmed. The embattled Abbott’s popularity has been tanking for a long time now causing him to try ever more desperate stunts to try and revive his flagging fortunes. His carbon tax scare campaign has utterly failed. His constant attacks on the Prime Minister have made him appear to the voters as a misogynistic, sexist bully. Abbott Tries To Rewrite History On Twitter

Tony Abbott has been caught out trying to rewrite history on Twitter. The truth is he had to be overruled by his boss (then Prime Minister John Howard) to include Gardasil on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) (source: Howard overrules Abbott on cancer drug). Tony Abbott Has A New One Ripped In Him

In Parliament yesterday, Tony Abbott scraped through the bottom of the barrel. Completely disregarding the backlash against the far right wing mouthpiece, Alan Jones, Abbott thought he was being comical when he said “that this government should die of shame”. Are there no depths to which this grub won’t stoop. This fired up the Prime Minister who gave one of the best replies she’s ever given in Parliament, and totally ripped a new one in the low-life. There was apparently a Newspoll taken last weekend (September 29-30), the results of which, for unknown reasons, were never released. Rumours abounded that News Limited, which owns Newspoll, were disappointed with the results because they showed Labor in front of the Noalition and were highly unfavourable to its leader Tony Abbott. The Daily Derp has previously covered how News Limited manipulates Newspoll’s results by publishing phantom leadership challenge articles in the run up to the polls being taken (Leadership Challenges And Newspoll). Last weekend also saw the scandal that blew up over the disgraceful comments made by the far right mouthpiece Alan Jones(1) at a Liberal Party function attended by several Liberal frontbenchers. RIP John Gillard

The Prime Minister is heading home from the APEC summit in Vladivostok to be with her family after her father John Gillard passed away this morning. John must have been so proud when his daughter Julia became Prime Minister of the country he chose to call home. The Derp offers it condolences and best wishes to the Gillard family on this sad occasion. Journalist Chris Kenny summed it up the best on Twitter:   Chris Kenny ‏@chriskkenny A bloke who brings his family to Australia for a better life, and sees his daughter become PM, is a winner. A Septimanae Horribilis For Tony Abbott

Tony Abbott has just endured what Queen Elizabeth II might describe as a septimanae horribilis, or a horrible week. It began on Monday, the 20th of August when he was ordered to leave Parliament for one hour under Standing Order 94a. He was ordered by the Deputy Speaker, Anna Burke, to withdraw comments he made about the Prime Minister’s honesty – without qualifications. He then withdrew his comments, and added a qualification, leaving the Deputy Speaker with no choice but to turf him out of the chamber. Let’s relive that glorious moment again: That was just a sampler for the real self inflicted damage he was about to achieve though.
